Overview
Our current locations reflect the presence of three Volkswagen/PowerCo vehicle battery production facilities. This initial focus will not restrict other regions in the electric mobility ecosystem from participating in the TEVT initiative. Please consider the following three country regions as your early partners in electric mobility.
Canada
St. Thomas, Ontario, located in the Southwestern part of Ontario and is set to become home to PowerCo's flagship North America EV battery production facility, slated to commence operations by 2027. This facility aims to supply batteries for up to one million electric vehicles. With a rich automotive history spanning over 125 years, St. Thomas is deeply ingrained in the automotive industry, closely linked to the manufacturing ecosystems of the USA and Mexico. The region hosts eight OEM production facilities, including major players like Toyota, Honda, Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, which rely on a network of nearly 700 parts suppliers, including renowned companies like Magna, Linamar, and Martinrea.
Germany
Salzgitter, Germany is the first VW PowerCo battery hub including a battery recycling pilot plant and a battery cell development lab. The Center of Excellence (CoE) Battery Cell research lab will employ over 1000 people. VW plans to produce the prismatic unified cell at Salzgitter starting in 2025 that will be used in up to 80% of all EV produced by the VW Group brands including Audi, Skoda, Porsche, SEAT, and others. The unified cell is expected to reduce battery costs by up to 50%, Volkswagen estimates.
Spain
Sagunto in Valencia, Spain has been chosen by Volkswagen PowerCo as the location for its second battery cell factory in Europe. Gigafactory Valencia will start production of unified cells in 2026 and will directly employ more than 3,000 people in the future, with an estimated up to 30,000 indirect jobs potentially being created at suppliers and partners in Spain.
